Gegen Ende 2021 startete The Macallan die „A Night On Earth“-Serie, um in Form von jährlich neuen Limited Editions verschiedene Destinationen und lokale Traditionen in der Neujahrsnacht zu zelebrieren. Jüngst veröffentlichte die Brennerei in der schottischen Speyside das „The Journey“ getaufte Second Release*, das von der „Reise“ erzählen soll, auf der man erkenne, dass einzigartige Momente gemeinsam mit Freunden und Familie am wichtigsten für uns sind. Ein entsprechendes Design, das über mehrere Ebenen verfügen soll, steuerte die chinesische Mixed-Media-Künstlerin Nini Sum aus Shanghai bei. Der vor diesem Hintergrund abgefüllte Single Malt Scotch Whisky reifte in einer Kombination aus First-Fill-Bourbon-Barrels und Ex-Sherry-Casks aus europäischer sowie amerikanischer Eiche. Eine Altersangabe existiert nicht. Abgefüllt wurde mit einem Alkoholvolumen von 43 Prozent. Bezüglich einer etwaigen Kältefiltration oder Hinzugabe von Farbstoff ist nichts bekannt.
Den Geruch beschreibt The Macallan mit gerösteter Eiche, einem cremigem Pudding aus gedämpftem Reis und Kokosmilch, Zitrusfrüchten, Vanille und Haferkeksen. Der Geschmack sei wie ein Ausbruch von spritzigen Zitrusfrüchten – Zitrone und Limette – mit süßer, cremiger Vanille und gerösteter Kokosnuss. Im Abgang erweise sich der Single Malt als mittelkräftig mit süßer, getoasteter Eiche und Vanille.

Künstlerin Nini Sum erzählt: „The steam coming off hot food during the New Year dinner is one of the most vivid ‚home‘ feelings I remember. I wanted to re-create that atmosphere, those precious moments of gathering and reunion under a bright moon bringing us all together. During this time of the year, people who work in big cities go through the world’s largest annual human migration to go back to their hometowns for that moment of reunion with their families and friends. When the fire is lit inside and paper lanterns hang from the roof, you know there is someone there waiting for you to come home so they can welcome you with a hot meal and a hug.“
Seit kurzer Zeit wird der The Macallan A Night On Earth The Journey im deutschen Fachhandel angeboten. Wie viele Flaschen existieren und zudem ihren Weg nach Deutschland gefunden haben, verbleibt im Dunkeln. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung wird mit 124 Euro für die 0,7-l-Flasche inklusive Geschenkverpackung angegeben.
* Vom Erstling, dem The Macallan A Night On Earth In Scotland, gab es 2022 noch eine Neuauflage, die bisweilen auch als Second Release der Serie bezeichnet wurde.
